Transportation Project Requests

2021 Member Designated Projects for Surface Transportation

The U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure announced in March 2021 that it would accept requests for specific highway and transit project designations, as part of its 2021 surface transportation authorization legislation. These requests, known as Member Designated Projects, provide local leaders with the opportunity to identify local surface transportation priorities for potential inclusion in the U.S. House of Representatives’ surface transportation authorization legislation.

The newly established process for submitting Member Designated Project requests includes important transparency, accountability, and oversight measures. To ensure transparency and oversight, Members who submit Member Designated Project requests for their local communities must post each submitted request online to their official house.gov website with details of the submission available to the public. To ensure accountability, Members must describe in their request why the requested project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds by detailing the value to the community and the local, regional, and/or state approvals that already support the project. Additionally, Members must affirm that neither the Member, their spouse, nor any immediate family member has a financial interest or the potential for financial gain from any of the requested projects.

In order to identify the highest priority local transportation needs in Central Virginia, Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s office requested project submissions from all 10 counties in VA-07 and from the Virginia Governor’s office. Rep. Spanberger’s office also sought input from the Virginia Department of Transportation and from regional planning organizations that have jurisdiction in VA-07. The following local transportation project funding requests were submitted to Rep. Spanberger’s office by individual County Boards and Administrators across VA-07 and by the Office of the Governor. Upon receipt of funding requests and documents detailing the community need, support, and requisite approvals, Rep. Spanberger’s office submitted the following project requests to the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for possible inclusion in surface transportation legislation.
