Congresswoman: “While the Resignation of the U.S. Secret Service Director Earlier this Week was an Overdue Step Toward Accountability, the American People Deserve Answers”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously to create a bipartisan Task Force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13, 2024.

“As a former intelligence officer and former federal law enforcement officer, I remain stunned by the obvious security failures that enabled a gunman to perpetrate a shooting at a campaign rally that killed one man, wounded two others, and nearly succeeded in assassinating former President Trump in Pennsylvania. We cannot let it happen again.

“While the resignation of the U.S. Secret Service Director earlier this week was an overdue step toward accountability, the American people deserve answers. I’m hopeful that this new, bipartisan Task Force will reveal more details about how a would-be assassin came mere millimeters from taking the life of former President Trump. Those culpable for this breakdown in security must face disciplinary action.”
