WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today issued the following statement on the passing of former Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles, who served as Virginia’s 65th Governor from 1986 to 1990.

“Governor Baliles was a model public servant, and he truly represented the best values of our Commonwealth. His term as Governor was marked by compassionate leadership, cooperation on both sides of the aisle, and a focus on long-term projects that could grow Virginia’s economy for decades to come. Governor Baliles also recognized the importance of soil and water conservation to Virginia’s long-term economic strength, and this idea was reflected in his work to jumpstart efforts to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay. After serving as Governor, he remained deeply committed to growing the next generation of leaders, including through his service at the University of Virginia. My thoughts are with the Baliles family during this difficult time, and Governor Baliles’ humble leadership lives on through those he mentored, inspired, and loved.”
