Congresswoman: “We Remember the Americans Who Set Forth in Service, Those Who Felt a Calling to Defend Our Core American Values, and Those Who Laid Down Their Lives to Protect Our Freedoms”

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement ahead of Memorial Day 2024.

“Memorial Day reminds us of the often-steep price of freedom and the sacrifices of the brave Americans who answered the call to serve our country in uniform. Freedom is worth defending, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice are reminders of that truth.

“On Memorial Day, we are also reminded of America’s unique role on the global stage — one fulfilled with a commitment to freedom and democratic ideals. We remember the Americans who set forth in service, those who felt a calling to defend our core American values, and those who laid down their lives to protect our freedoms. The continued preservation of the liberties enshrined in our Constitution rests on the shoulders of these heroes.

“We honor their courage and commitment to country. But we also remember their deep devotion to their children, their love of life, and the missing piece in the hearts of their loved ones. Though their absences can never be filled, I hope that every Gold Star Family member can find comfort in their beautiful memories. I encourage all Virginians to remember our neighbors who gave everything on behalf of their fellow Americans.”
