Spanberger Statement Ahead of Memorial Day 2023

Congresswoman: “We Will Never Forget the Virginians Whose Individual Sacrifices are Foundational to the Success of This Lasting American Experiment”

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement ahead of Memorial Day 2023.

“Throughout our nation’s long and storied history, one theme spans generations — the dedication of the American servicemember. From fighting for our country’s independence to protecting our world from terrorism and every battle in between, our servicemembers have sacrificed an incredible amount for our democracy — often, even, with their own lives.

“Memorial Day gives all of us a chance to reflect on the service and sacrifice of these brave men and women who paid the heavy price of freedom and keep their memories alive. The United States of America would not be the beacon of hope and opportunity it is without their selfless determination, demonstrated courage, and uncommon valor. These men and women believed in the power of our values, the common purpose we share, and the promise of our country. We must never forget those who gave their lives for that promise.

“We will always tell the stories of our fellow Americans killed or missing in action in the defense of our nation. We will never forget the Virginians whose individual sacrifices are foundational to the success of this lasting American experiment.”

“Whether through a ceremony, graveside visit, or moment of silence, I hope Virginians take time to honor the lives they lived — lives marked by courage, a sense of commitment to country, and a devotion to a higher purpose.”
