HENRICO, V.A. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement ahead of Labor Day.

“Since 1894, we have recognized the first Monday in September as a federal holiday to commemorate the contributions of American workers — from the earliest days of our United States to now. Labor Day honors the hardworking men and women who built our great nation. Whether by punching a clock, swiping a badge, putting on an apron, or taking care of an aging parent, Virginians go to work each day to support their families, our communities, our Commonwealth, and our country.

“Workers are the cornerstone of Virginia’s economy and keep our Commonwealth moving forward. The challenges of the last year and a half have underscored just how much our nation relies on working families. I’m thankful for the hardworking Virginians — and the organizations that defend them — who keep our country and our Commonwealth strong.

“Since coming to Congress, I’ve maintained a commitment to empowering workers, expanding workforce training opportunities, and supporting the unions that are essential to protecting workers’ rights. I am honored to serve them, and I hope Central Virginians have a safe and restful holiday weekend.”
