Spanberger Statement Ahead of Independence Day
HENRICO, V.A. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement to mark the Fourth of July weekend in Central Virginia.
“Nearly 250 years ago, our young country first declared its ‘power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, and establish commerce’ — the uncertain beginnings of what would eventually give birth to the most powerful nation in history.
“The story of the Second Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence marks the beginning of a tradition — a tradition signified by the debate, struggle, and vigor of a true democratic experiment. Independence Day reminds us that our own stories have a role to play in this ongoing experiment — and that we have an opportunity and a responsibility to ensure its success.
“This weekend, we recognize the values outlined in our founding documents, as well as the hard work before us to ensure our shared values of liberty, equality, and justice are extended to all of our citizens. At ceremonies and parades across Central Virginia, we also honor those who have defended these values at home and abroad. I hope all Virginians will take a moment to thank our veterans, active duty servicemembers, and military families for their selfless service and their enduring commitment to their fellow Americans.
“As we recover from the hardship and loss of the COVID-19 crisis and work together to unite and rebuild our country, I wish all Central Virginians a memorable and safe Fourth of July. I hope all of our neighbors will have the opportunity to celebrate this great country, hug one another after many months apart, and spend much-deserved time with their friends, family, and loved ones.”
