Since the Start of 2019, the Congresswoman’s Office Has Returned More Than $39 Million in Backlogged IRS Refunds, Social Security Checks, VA Benefits, & More

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger announced today that her office has now returned more than $39 million in federal casework funds to residents of Virginia’s Seventh District.

Casework dollars are secured and returned by fighting for fair treatment for those having issues with a federal agency, program, or benefit. Spanberger’s office assists Virginians with many casework concerns — including backlogged Social Security checks, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, Medicare benefits, and delayed Internal Revenue Service (IRS) refunds.

Since taking office on January 3, 2019, Spanberger’s office has closed more than 10,189 cases for Virginians and returned a total of $39,000,952.

“Today, I’m proud to share that my dedicated casework team and I have returned more than $39 million to residents of Virginia’s Seventh District,” said Spanberger. “Our office is available to do all that we can to help make sure the Virginians we serve get the care and benefits they are owed by the federal government. If any resident of Virginia’s Seventh District is experiencing an issue with a federal agency, program, or benefit, I encourage them to contact my office and we will do our best to assist them.”

Below are recent success stories submitted by Seventh District residents who worked with Spanberger’s office:

“The office of Representative Spanberger continues to provide the most outstanding constituent service, and outstanding service among the highest performing service providers among all organization types, including public and private sectors. All staff communicate professionally, with empathy, and expediently in voice and electronic communications. Everybody works quickly and accurately, while implementing the most effective plan needed to expeditiously complete each case and project in a timely fashion, thereby demonstrating outstanding leadership. Awesome to work with, thanks again! FIVE STARS.” — Michael, Spotsylvania

“I am very grateful and appreciative of the care and assistance I received from Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s office and the resolution of my issue with OPM. My ex-spouse and I had a court order and supporting paperwork telling OPM to provide half of my government pension directly to my ex-spouse. OPM did not take any action for over a year. After a year of several frustrating emails and phone calls to OPM to solve this matter, I contacted Rep. Spanberger’s office and shortly received a reply from Shawn Meredith in Rep. Spanberger’s office. Without the assistance of Rep. Spanberger’s office and the actions of Shawn Meredith, this action would not be resolved today. Both my ex-spouse and I are extremely thankful for the actions provided by Rep. Spanberger’s office and especially for Shawn Meredith. This truly shows that Rep. Spanberger and her staff really care for her constituents.” — William, Prince William

“By working with your office, I received responses back from SSA. Before your office got involved, they did not respond. I was going back and forth with SSA for four months with no success. But once they received the outreach from your office, they started working with me to find a solution to the problem. I now have my Part B Medicare back which I am able to continue to take care of my health concerns. Thank you and your staff for helping with this serious issue.” — Tracey, Prince William
