ICYMI: Thousands of Virginians Join Spanberger’s Telephone Town Hall Focused on Issues Facing Virginia Families, Economy, & Seniors
Topics Included Local Safety Issues, Immigration, Gun Violence Prevention, & Repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger last night hosted an open, public telephone town hall to discuss issues faced by Virginia families, small businesses, and seniors.
During Wednesday’s event, Spanberger and Seventh District residents discussed many topics — including securing America’s southern border, tackling local safety concerns, preventing gun violence, protecting Social Security benefits, and more. Spanberger also discussed her work to strengthen Virginia’s workforce and economy, her efforts to expand broadband internet connectivity, and the need for Congress to prevent a dangerous government shutdown ahead of a critical funding deadline on September 30.
Additionally, the Congresswoman provided an update on the effort she is leading to force a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on her bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act. Her bill would eliminate the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), two provisions of Social Security that slash retirement benefits for tens of thousands of Virginia retirees.
More than 3,300 Virginians joined Wednesday night’s event. Click here for a full video recording of the event.
“Thank you to the thousands of Virginians who tuned in to Wednesday’s telephone town hall event. Every conversation I have with our neighbors helps me better advocate on their behalf through my work in Congress — and I appreciate every resident of Virginia’s Seventh District who joined me to share their concerns, feedback, and ideas,” said Spanberger. “Last night, we touched on many of the issues that matter most to the Virginians I represent — including my efforts to strengthen our southern border and crack down on illicit fentanyl, my work to avert a government shutdown that would be devastating for Virginia’s workforce and economy, and my recent effort to force a vote on my bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act. I look forward to the next opportunity to connect with so many Virginians, and I encourage anyone who was unable to ask a question to please reach out to my office.”
Wednesday’s event was Spanberger’s 61st open, public town hall event. These town halls have focused on a range of issues facing Virginia’s families, Veterans, seniors, small businesses, students, and communities. Click here to watch full recordings of previous events.
