WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger continued to speak out against the Department of Justice’s Texas v. U.S. lawsuit pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which—if successful—would dismantle the entire existing healthcare law.

According to the Urban Institute, 642,000 Virginians would lose health insurance coverage by repealing the existing healthcare law through the lawsuit, leading to a 96 percent increase in the Commonwealth’s uninsured rate. Additionally, protections for those with pre-existing conditions could be gutted. Approximately 3,441,000 Virginians have a pre-existing condition, including more than 444,000 Virginia children.

On CNN’s “New Day” yesterday, Spanberger commented on the administration’s continued sabotage of the American healthcare system—and she stressed the importance of lawmakers redoubling their focus on lowering costs, increasing competition, and stabilizing the healthcare marketplace. “Healthcare has been and continues to be the number-one issue impacting constituents in my district and constituents across this country. The fact that we have arrived at a place where we are willing to use healthcare as a political punching bag is absolutely unacceptable,” Spanberger said on CNN’s New Day. “The American people elected a wave of new legislators, because we wanted to fix our healthcare system—we wanted to improve upon it.”

Earlier this week, Spanberger outlined her continued opposition to the lawsuit and its potential impacts on the health of Central Virginia’s working families.

BACKGROUND

Since arriving in the U.S. House, Spanberger has continued to push back against the ongoing healthcare attacks that have caused premiums and uninsured rates to increase across the country. Earlier this year, she spoke on the floor of the U.S. House in opposition to efforts to eliminate healthcare protections from Central Virginians with pre-existing conditions. She also cosponsored and voted in support of a bipartisan resolution to condemn the administration’s active legal campaign to gut the existing healthcare law.
