Following Bipartisan Push, Spanberger, McClellan, Wittman Announce More Than $2.2 Million For Richmond International Airport
The Federal Award — Made Possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law — Will Allow Richmond International Airport to Design & Construct a Consolidated Screening Checkpoint
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representatives Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07), Jennifer McClellan (D-VA-04), and Rob Wittman (R-VA-01) today announced that — after sending a joint letter of support — Richmond International Airport (RIC) will receive $2,250,000 to design a large, consolidated passenger security checkpoint to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion.
This grant funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Airport Terminals Program, which was established by the bipartisan infrastructure law. According to the Capital Region Airport Commission, RIC set new annual records for passenger traffic during 2023 by moving more than 4.7 million passengers. This funding will help RIC meet current and projected capacity requirements, reduce the current imbalance across checkpoints, and connect both of the airport’s concourses by supporting the design and construction of a consolidated passenger screening checkpoint.
“For the second year in a row, Richmond International Airport is on track to serve a record number of passengers,” said Spanberger. “The airport is integral to the continued growth of our Commonwealth’s economy and Virginians’ ability to get where they’re going through the air. I’m proud to have worked alongside Representatives McClellan and Wittman to bring this funding home.”
“Richmond International Airport has incredible impacts on the Central Virginia economy. Last year, the airport reported record passenger traffic, which will continue to grow in the coming years,” said McClellan. “We must ensure we modernize and upgrade existing infrastructure to support current and future needs. I’m thrilled by today’s funding announcement to build a new consolidated passenger screening checkpoint, which will increase capacity and efficiency.”
The application for this federal award was submitted by the Capital Region Airport Commission.
BACKGROUND
According to DOT, the Airport Terminals Program provides $5 billion in competitive grant funding for terminal development projects that address the aging air infrastructure at the nation’s airports. Eligible projects promote safe, sustainable, and accessible airport terminals, on-airport rail access projects, and airport-owned airport traffic control towers.
