13 News Now: Lawmakers say progress being made on slow mail delivery in Virginia, but more work remains to be done

13 NEWS NOW, MIKE GOODING

Some progress is being made in addressing the ongoing slow mail delivery issues across Virginia.

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, along with Representatives Rob Wittman and Abigail Spanberger, met with U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Wednesday. They received a status update on the U.S. Postal Service’s ongoing work to improve service while implementing new efficiency reforms.

The lawmakers called it a “productive conversation” but noted “the concerns of Virginians who know there is still significant room for improvement.”

“So, we’re seeing improvements that are ongoing, and we’re also seeing fewer constituent complaints and that suggests progress is being made, but it’s not enough,” said Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia).

The on-time delivery rate of first-class mail in Virginia improved from 66% to 77% during the first quarter of the year. But the lawmakers say more work is needed to meet the Postal Service’s goal of 93%.
