On the day when cupid reigns supreme, U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger delivered valentines to military veterans in Central Virginia.

The cards bore handwritten messages from schoolchildren and adults sent to Spanberger’s district offices—more than 1,900 valentines in all.

The freshman congresswoman launched her “Valentines for Veterans” effort last month.

On Valentine’s Day, Spanberger visited the Fredericksburg VA Clinic and the McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond to deliver the messages and to thank veterans and their families for their service to the nation.

“Today, I was honored to meet so many veterans who have given so much to our country—and I’ve been touched by the tremendous amount of community participation in the Valentines for Veterans effort,” she said.

By recognizing and thanking local veterans, contributors reminded them that their selfless service does not go unnoticed, she said.

“Our district clearly has a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for our service members and veterans, and that’s clear in every kind and inspiring word of these thoughtful notes,” Spanberger said. “I’d like to thank the hundreds of students and teachers at schools across our district who participated in this project, as well as the many families who used this initiative as an opportunity to teach their children about those who’ve fought to keep us safe.”

The Democrat, who lives in Henrico County, represents Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
